Ironman California takes over Sacramento on Sunday

The race includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile-long bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Ironman California is happening in Sacramento on Sunday. Here's what to know about the race.

The race includes a 2.4 swim, a 112-mile-long bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

The race starts with the swim, which will have a rolling start. Age group athletes will start to enter the water at 6:35 a.m. It's estimated to take 25-30 minutes for all athletes to enter the water. Everyone will be in the water by 7 a.m., according to the website.

Sacramento Ironman Course

Swim

The swim is a rolling start. Athletes start in the American River near Township 9 Park and exit near the Tower Bridge.

Bike

It'll be a flat, two-hour loop of farm and wine country in the Sacramento River delta region.

Run

It's a flat, two-loop course. Athletes start heading south on the River Walk Trail along the Sacramento River to the first turnaround near the Mill Street Pier. Then, head north, to cross the Tower Bridge and run along the River Walk Trail before heading back and crossing Tower Bridge to pick up the American River Bike trail in Old Sacramento into Discovery Park. Once runners have reached the turnaround in Discovery Park, they will retrace their footsteps back to transition to start their second lap.

Once the runners have completed their second lap, they will run through Old Sacramento, along Front Street and back into downtown Sacramento, where they will run around the California State Capitol building and gardens.

Course Cut-Off Times

The course closes at midnight, but some portions of the race also have cut-off times.

Swim

The swim course will close 2 hours and 20 minutes after the last age group athlete starts the swim. Each athlete will get the full 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the 2.4-mile swim regardless of what time they enter the water. Athletes who take longer than 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the swim will receive a DNF.

Bike

The bike course will close at 5:30 p.m. Athletes arriving at the bike dismount line after the cut-off time won't be able to continue.

Run

The run course will officially close at midnight. There are two intermediate cut-off times including at mile 12.5 at 9:30 p.m. at the River Walk Trail near transition and near mile 17 at 10:45 p.m. at Riverwalk Arch on the West Sacramento side of Tower Bridge.

Traffic Impacts 

Traffic impacts have already started, but most will be on Sunday, October 27. There will be impacts on Highway 50 ramps, in Yolo and Solano counties, and the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento. Find a full list of impacts HERE.
