Meadowview neighbors traumatized after seeing kids run away from a shooting that left 5 people hurt

"Yesterday afternoon, my daughters and grandson were visiting and we started seeing kids running back here. And my daughter said, Mom they're fighting," said Ruiz.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — There are more questions than answers after five people were shot at an apartment complex in the South Sacramento Meadowview Neighborhood.

Some neighbors tell ABC10 it may have started with a fight.

Many of them stayed tight-lipped in fear of retaliation, but a few people say they recall a group of kids playing with water guns before the shooting unfolded.

Lupita Ruiz lives with her brother just a few feet from where it all happened.

"Yesterday afternoon, my daughters and grandson were here visiting and we started seeing kids running back here. And my daughter said, 'Mom they're fighting,'" said Ruiz in Spanish.

At first, she thought she heard fireworks because of the holiday but later learned it was gunfire. The grandmother says she was fearful a stray bullet would hit her grandson or one of her family members.

The Sacramento Police Department says the shooting was reported around 8 p.m.

Officers arrived to find five victims, with at least one gunshot wound. Four were adults and one was a teenage girl.

Community Advocate Berry Accius says the shooting is frustrating.

"As CBOs working in communities, trying to get funding, trying to get support, knowing the summer time is right around the corner you know with the active guns in the community, that we've spoken upon at length, nothing surprises us," said Accius.

Ruiz says she believes the violence will only worsen since the summer is just starting. This past Saturday she witnessed a group also starting a fight at night.

"They were yelling at each other, insulting one another. I thought someone in the neighborhood was going to call the police but no one called," said Ruiz in Spanish.

The founder of Voice of the Youth says he'd like to see more funding to keep kids safe.

"When we talk about funding, we're saying that giving community programs you know opportunities and moneys to be able to do programming in the summertime," said Accius.

For Ruiz, says enough is enough. She's already discussing moving out of the neighborhood.

"Well, we would like for more security and for police to patrol this area a little more. That way it would help this neighborhood so those types of fights wouldn't happen," said Ruiz in Spanish.

All five victims of Monday night's shooting are in stable condition and expected to survive.

At this time, there's no suspect description but you are asked to call Sacramento Police if you know anything about the shooting.
