SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department announced they are hiring for multiple positions.
"It's really a unique position. It's challenging, and that's why we're looking for really good people," said Fire Capt. Chris Vestal. "We're having a lot of people retire. We're having people promote to higher ranks. As that happens…that opens up those entry-level positions."
Vestal told ABC10 the department is looking to hire 40 to 60 positions that pay $4,700 a month plus incentives.
"So we are pretty competitive with all the other large agencies throughout the state," said Vestal. "We hope that attracts a lot of people to join Metro Fire."
In one year's time the department responds to more than 100,000 calls. That includes at least 2,400 fires in 2017 alone, but they also provide medical aid on more than 66,000 calls. That's why the department is looking to hire firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs.
