SACRAMENTO, Calif. — City crews are working hard to pick up leaves and other debris ahead of Tuesday’s expected storm weather. The organic matter in Sacramento's streets can otherwise clog storm drains.
"We've cleared out our screens, got the drainage issues kind of taken care of as much as we can beforehand,” explained Sacramento’s Director of Emergency Management, Daniel Bowers. “We also have our public's works crews out with the claws picking up as many leaves as we're able toss."
City workers were using the so-called “claw” to clear city streets. Bowers said there are plenty of things people can do to help keep the drains clear.

"If they could, top off those green bins, get as much debris off the ground and secured into those green bins as possible,” instructed Bowers. “Understand there are some leaf piles out there in the streets. They're waiting to get cleaned up. As long as there's about a foot or so in the gutter, they're able to allow that waterway to stay open, and those leaf piles wont impede the flow of that water in the drainage."
Bowers also encouraged people to call the city if they see a problem.
"Most importantly during the event, please call 311,” said Bowers. “We'll get a crew out there to clear the drainage as quick as possible and keep the water flowing into the drainage."
