Man killed, 2 others injured in fiery 3-vehicle crash on Highway 120 in San Joaquin County | Update

The crash, involving a Chevy SUV, a Hyundai sedan, and a big rig, happened around 7:30 a.m. on Highway 120 near French Camp Road.

MANTECA, Calif. — One person was killed and two others were injured following a three-vehicle crash, including a semi, on Highway 120 east of Manteca.

The crash, involving a Chevy SUV, a Hyundai sedan, and a big rig, happened around 7:30 a.m. on Highway 120 near French Camp Road, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Stockton branch.

According to CHP investigators, a 60-year-old man was driving westbound in the SUV when, for an unknown reason, he made a left turn into the path of the semi, colliding head-on. The impact from the crash pushed the SUV into the Hyundai, which investigators said was traveling westbound behind the SUV. The crash caused at least one of the vehicles to catch fire, Caltrans reported.

The SUV driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 21-year-old woman and a 7-year-old male passenger in the Hyundai were both injured in the crash. The woman suffered minor injuries, but investigators say the 7-year-old boy sustained “major” injuries. Both were taken to the hospital.

The semi driver, identified as a 29-year-old male, was not injured.

Authorities shut down the highway in both directions for hours in order to investigate and clear the scene. The highway was re-opened just before 12:30 p.m.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but investigators say drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors. Anyone with information is asked to call CHP Stockton at 209-938-4800.
