STOCKTON, Calif. — Stockton Police released new details Sunday, nearly 24 hours after an officer opened fire on a stabbing suspect leaving the man critically hurt.
According to police, two officers were called to the 1500 block of Eleventh Street around 9 a.m. Saturday after someone called 911 to report that their parents were in an argument and their dad was going to stab their mom.
When two officers got to the scene at an apartment complex, the man identified as 37-year-old Robert Anthony Cruz, was allegedly still armed with a knife and refusing to comply with the officers's commands.
Authorities say Cruz tried to stab the woman again which is when an officer opened fire, hitting Cruz. No officers were injured.
Medics took the woman and Cruz to a hospital. The woman had multiple stab wounds, but has since been released from the hospital, officers say. Cruz is reportedly listed in critical but stable condition.
Officers say five children were in the apartment as the stabbing and shooting unfolded. All five were uninjured and rescued from the residence.
"We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim who had to bear the pain and trauma," the Stockton Police Department said in a statement. "Domestic violence is a serious concern that affects our communities deeply. Our department is committed to collaborating with our partners to prevent and respond to these emergencies promptly and efficiently."
At the scene, officers say they recovered a knife that Cruz allegedly used in the stabbing.
The Stockton Police Department says that the officers on scene had their body-worn cameras on and activated. Investigators with the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office and California Department of Justice are investigating the shooting.
