Stockton finds ways to cool down amid heat wave

Yogurt shops, splash pads and HVAC companies were busy as temperatures climbed into the 100s Wednesday.

STOCKTON, Calif. — The water fountains at Weber Point in downtown Stockton were already filled with families before noon Wednesday — a sign of the season.

"Man, I'm sweating," said Mary Brazell  "When kids get hot, they whine a lot."

Fortunately, there was no whining Wednesday because she brought her six-year-old daughter Mariah to the fountains. Eventually, Brazell had to get into the water as well.

"It's real nice and cool," said Brazell seconds after stepping out of the water stream. "I'm already feeling hot."

Meanwhile, up north on Pacific Avenue, Tiger’s Yogurt was a fitting place for seven-year-old Max Ward to get a post-baseball camp treat and for a group of friends to hang out.

"Just trying to cool down," said Virginia Buck. "I haven't seen my friend in a few days so I told her I'd treat her to ice cream or yogurt."

The popular yogurt shop added extra staff for the hot days which is when they expect to see a three- to four-time increase in customers.

However, it’s not just ice cream shops getting busy. Scott Lovotti, owner of heating and air conditioning company Lovotti Inc., is preparing for more business as well.

"We're pushing almost a week out to get to people," said Lovotti. "People come home from work and they notice, 'Oh man, things start to fail.' Because when it gets hot they start to put a lot of pressure on (A/C units)."

While Lovotti is happy to help more customers solve their air conditioning issues, he said there are some steps to take to prevent issues.

"Since it's hot outside, make sure you close all your window coverings, you know, keep them closed, don't let the sun beat on the windows too much," said Lovotti. "Maintenance is key and we always recommend firing these things up before it gets hot."

Brazell might need those recommendations — she plans to stay in the A/C the rest of the day.

"We just like to hang out, stay in the air conditioning, cook, that's all," said Brazell. "I'm going to let her play around because sooner or later when we get ready to walk home, she'll dry right off."
