TURLOCK, Calif. — A man on probation for theft and another man wanted for theft were arrested in Turlock after being caught with over 400 pieces of stolen mail, police said.
In a news release, the Turlock Police Department said an officer responding to a reported mailbox theft at the Park Knolls apartments Tuesday morning spotted a car matching a description that came in.
According to police, a witness reported the mailbox theft and provided the description of both the suspects and vehicle that took off from the area.
The officer tried to do a traffic stop, but police said the car took off, leading to a chase. It came to an end not long after the car went off the road in an effort to reach the freeway. The suspects tried to run away, but were quickly caught.
The suspects were identified as Michael Mascarenas, 25, and Angel Galvan, 20, both of Stockton.
After a search of the car, police found more than 400 pieces of stolen mail.
According to police, Galvan was on probation for theft and Mascarenas had four warrants, which included one for theft.
Mascarenas was booked for evading, resisting arrest, possession of stolen mail, identity theft and warrants. Galvan was arrested for resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. Additional charges are likely.
Police are processing the mail and will be contacting recipients soon.
