The Claw, officials work to clear Sacramento streets before rain

City workers collected as many leaves as possible with the Claw Friday before a storm is expected to dump rain over the city and possibly slow street cleaners down.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento is steadily working to clear streets of leaves and other debris as rain heads to the region.

City workers collected as many leaves as possible with the Claw Friday before a storm is expected to dump rain over the city and possibly slow street cleaners down.

"The rain is about to come and that does tend to cause a lot more leaves to fall down, so it makes for a heavier leaf drop. It also makes the material on the streets a lot heavier to collect," said Jesa David with Sacramento Recycling and Solid Waste.

Residents should fill their yard waste containers with what they can and keep leaves in piles away from storm drains and bike lanes.

"It's especially important to keep them out of the gutters because we get a lot of flooding, a lot of localized flooding in Sacramento,” said David. “We'll send out people to go help clear those gutters, but we need residents and citizens to help us as well."

Organic waste can be put in with your leaves but has to be put in your bin. Crews will be out in force from early morning until late afternoon until Jan. 29, 2024, to clean up the leaves.

"We'd like to remind people to just to please be patient with our claw operators and our people collecting our leaves,” said David. “Those piles might sit in the street for a little bit but it takes them a while to get through the street and to collect that material."

A collection calendar can be found HERE. Officials suggest residents check it frequently due to possible daily changes depending on weather, amount of debris and more.
