IONE, Calif. — The community of Ione came together to honor the life of Corey Shearer as it dedicates a memorial bench and garden for Corey Shearer, who was shot and killed at a 2022 Rancho Cordova party.
“We are so grateful,” said Crystal Shearer, Corey’s mother. “This is just a beautiful tribute.”
The City of Ione and community coming together to build the memorial bench and garden which is located on Castle Oaks Drive.
“It is really special, and I just really appreciate everything they are doing,” said Makenzie Shearer, Corey’s sister.
“It is really beautiful; it is really heartwarming, and it means so much to us. I cannot put into words,” said Crystal Shearer. “They have rallied around our family from the minute all of this happened.”
Shearer is described as a lover of family and nature and known for his sense of humor and beautiful smile.
The deadly shooting happened during a party in Rancho Cordova during August of 2022.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says Shearer was gun downed by 19-year-old Amyis Coogler. The motive remains unknown. When the shooting took place, the suspect was a minor and the family hopes the court will try him as an adult.
“Regardless of what the why is, we will never understand it because we will have a void in our heart forever,” said Jolene Pimentel, Corey’s Aunt.
It is a void no family wants to experience. But the memorial hopes it can fill some of it with love, as the family seeks justice.
“The saying on the bench is from his sister Madison when he first passed, ‘As long as he is in our hearts, he will be with us forever.’
With the large size of the lot, the family want it to be a place where other families can plant trees and place personalized plaques to honor their loved ones.
Coogler remains in the Sacramento County Main Jail and is not eligible for bail. He is due back in court on November 5th.
