TURLOCK, Calif. — The Turlock Unified School District community is mourning Sunday after a beloved basketball coach was killed in a crash Friday.
In a statement, Turlock Unified identified the coach as John Williams. Williams was a coach for the Turlock High School Bulldogs, a position he filled for more than 20 years.
"The Turlock High School and TUSD community is deeply saddened by the loss of John Williams. John was a beloved basketball coach for 20+ years for the Bulldogs and touched the lives of countless players and their families," the statement said. "We are sending our thoughts and condolences to his family at this difficult time. Counselors will be available for anyone seeking support upon our return to school. For those needing support sooner, we recommend reaching out to a trusted adult or contacting the Crisis Text Line on our Stopit App. We offer our greatest sympathy to all who are impacted by this tragedy."
According to a spokesperson for the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe, Williams was killed in a three-car crash around 4 p.m. Friday in the area of West Christoffersen Parkway and Kilroy Avenue in Turlock.
The Friday afternoon crash left multiple other people injured.
Over the weekend, more than $45,000 was raised to support Williams's family. The GoFundMe page describes Williams as a "larger than life person, a great friend, amazing coach and he would do anything for his family."
