STOCKTON, Calif. — Police are still looking for the people accused of shooting two teenagers at a busy shopping center in Stockton's Weston Ranch neighborhood along Manthey Road.
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. Monday as Brian Gomez was shopping nearby.
"If you hear gunshots, duck down," said Gomez, noting the non-fatal shooting was not the first time he'd seen violence at the shopping center. "That's all you can do."
While the teens' injuries were non-life-threatening, some people living in the community see the daytime violence involving youth as a threat to their safety, especially since police don't yet know what caused the shooting.
"Kids, mothers, parents, even elderly people come here," said Ken Thompson, a longtime Weston Ranch resident. "It needs to be put to a stop because we have a lot of families here... They need more programs for the youth out here because, without the programs for the youth, this is going to keep happening."
The Stockton Police Department says it's trying. It held a community meeting for the neighborhood nearly 24 hours after the shooting. The department says it also offers a business watch program to bring business owners together.
"We do ramp up patrols in affected areas and that's continuing to be in this case too," said Stockton Police spokesman David Scott. "We'll be adding visibility there."
Both community members and police agree it'll take more than one side to make a change, they just hope the change will start soon.
"A lot of that two-way conversation is really getting to the forefront of how we can better serve the community," said Scott. "We have got to have these tough conversations and we've got to get that to build that trust."
Anyone with information about the double shooting can call the Stockton Police Department.
