COPPEROPOLIS, Calif. — The remaining evacuation warnings that were in place for Calaveras County due to the Aero Fire were lifted Saturday, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office said.
As of Saturday afternoon, the wildfire had burned 5,351 acres and was 78% contained. Three structures were destroyed and one was damaged during the fire attack which began Monday, Cal Fire said.
Officials are still investigating what caused the blaze. Firefighters reported minimal fire activity on the frontlines Saturday morning with most of the smoke in the area coming from smoldering of large fuels in ash pits and stump holes.
Firefighters expect smoke to be visible within the fire's boundary for possibly several weeks.
During the nearly 5-day-long fire attack and mop-up, no injuries were reported but hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes. Deputies arrested two men within the evacuation zone Wednesday on suspicion of mail theft.
