Greenwood, Lotus residents say landline phones not working during PG&E power shutoffs

Some residents in communities in El Dorado County affected by the PG&E power shutoffs said they have inexplicably been losing their AT&T landline service, too.

GREENWOOD, Calif — A homeowner in Greenwood, California received a scare Thursday morning when they woke up and discovered their phone was not working.

Power to her home had been cut off Wednesday afternoon during the PG&E's power shutoffs. The homeowner, Linda Brown, said this isn’t the first time but it’s new.

“We’ve lived here since 2003 and until actually this year we never had any problem with the phone service,” explained Brown.

Brown's landline phone provider is AT&T. Now, Brown told ABC10 her landline goes out every time the power goes out.

“The last time they had the PG&E power outage, we noticed our phone went down,” said Brown. “Power went out yesterday afternoon. We had phone service last night. Today, 6 o’clock this morning, no phone service.”

Service to the landline resumed later in the day Thursday. Still, the issue is a big worry for Brown and her husband.

“The reason we have a landline is my husband and I both have medical conditions that if we need emergency services, we need it now,” explained Brown.

She’s not the only one who has experienced the issue. Further down the road at the Coloma Club in Lotus, patrons at a local bar spent the day eating and drinking by the light of camping lanterns.

“We have no power but I’ve got everything on ice, as far as beer and wine and bloody Mary mix, stuff like that,” explained bartender Linda Lindsay. “We have hard liquor, we have an ice machine, so we’re able to keep the bar going.”

The bar and restaurant at the club were also having landline phone issues.

“Well, we don’t have phone lines so we can’t get our to-go orders coming in so we’re kind of running through Facebook, letting them know our hours,” said Lindsay.

Lindsay explained they never had a problem in the past.

“We’ve always had phones," said Lindsay. “We’ve always had a phone line. I don’t know what it is. And this actually went out before the power went out yesterday. So I don’t know what’s going on with AT&T.”

AT&T issued a statement in response to this story, saying:

“We are doing everything we can to keep our customers connected. Prior to this event, we worked around the clock to deploy generators to crucial sites, including those in this area. Our team is onsite to make sure the generators are working properly and continue to move quickly to restore service to our facilities affected by this power shutdown.”
