Firefighters are battling the so-called Royal Fire in Tahoe National Forest.

The wildfire is burning in the Royal Gorge area of the forest. The Placer County Sheriff's Office and Tahoe National Forest are in unified command for the incident.

Forest service officials said aerial resources are heading to the fire, and ground crews are en route as well but the fire is in remote and difficult-to-access terrain.

It's burned around 54 acres at a rapid rate of spread, according to the latest update from Tahoe National Forest.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but according to Cal Fire NEU, the fire was reportedly caused by an escaped campfire found by hikers.

The sheriff's office said there are evacuation warnings for five homes on Soda Springs Road.

Smoke from the fire is currently visible from Highway 80.
