Sacramento air quality improves while wildfires rage in wine country

The air quality in Sacramento was upgraded to from unhealthy to good over the course of Sunday afternoon.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento's air quality has been upgraded to "Good" as 5 p.m. Sunday. The current air quality index (AQI) is 44.

Earlier on Sunday, Sacramento's AQI was 121, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. That means people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should limit prolonged and outdoor exertion, according to guidelines from AirNow

The average AQI for today was predicted to be 78, before strong winds fueled fires across the region. Monday's AQI is forecasted at 50, but shifting winds and spreading wildfires could drastically change that.

Stockton and Modesto had air considered hazardous throughout Sunday afternoon. However, the AQI south of Sacramento has also improved as Sunday wore on.

For reference, Mumbai, India has a current AQI of 76, which is considered moderate. The world's worst air quality recorded today was in Kolkata, India at a whopping 595 AQI.
