SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State University is hosting the first-ever Causeway Boxing Classic this week.
The boxing event will take place Friday at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento at 7 p.m.
The inaugural event will feature a full card of 14 fights across multiple weight classes featuring amateur boxers from Sacramento State, UC Davis, Air Force Academy, USC, UC Berkeley and other colleges.
Friday also serves as the eve of the 70th Causeway Classic football game between the Sac State Hornets and the UC Davis Aggies, creating a rivalry weekend between the two schools.
“We’re also putting some outstanding USA boxers, some of the best in our area on the card, as well as other collegiate boxers,” Sac State boxing coach Brandon Gonzalez said. “So, it’s going to be a huge event for not just the two universities, but for the boxing community in general.”
Sac State is hosting the event through its Combat U program, which formed in January behind the partnership of UFC Hall of Fame Urijah Faber. It’s reportedly the first-ever university-backed development program for combat sports.
“It’s a big opportunity to showcase our skills and everything we’ve been working towards this whole time,” said Sac State boxer Ayahna Gonzales, who is scheduled to compete in the event.
