Big rig crash causing traffic delays on I-5 near Elk Grove Boulevard cleared, Caltrans says | Update

Elk Grove commuters can check out some alternate routes.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Update:

The big rig holding up traffic on I-5 has been cleared, Caltrans said in an update on Twitter. There may still be delays in the northbound lanes.

Original story:

A big rig has crashed on northbound Interstate 5 at Elk Grove Boulevard, causing some traffic delays in the area.

The northbound I-5 freeway is reduced to one lane at this time. Traffic is backed up roughly 4 miles in that area.

The big rig is currently on its side and is loaded down with sod, according to a traffic report. There is no clear timeline for when the truck may be removed and lanes can reopen.

The crash has left limited options for Elk Grove commuters as a crash on Highway 99 has closed portions of the southbound freeway, leaving just one lane for drivers going in that direction. The Highway 99 crash was the result of a high-speed chase, leading to an overturned car and debris that crews are still cleaning up, according to Caltrans.

Commuters looking for alternate routes could try taking surface streets like Bruceville Road or Franklin Boulevard to avoid the traffic. Both of those roads lie in between I-5 and Highway 99, with Franklin Boulevard going straight through Elk Grove and into Sacramento for commuters looking to escape traffic on I-5. Bruceville Road can be used to possibly bypass some of the congestion on Highway 99.
