SACRAMENTO, Calif — Two storms will move into Northern California during the first full week of January, bringing wind, rain and snow.
The timing of these storms is beneficial with almost all precipitation falling in the overnight hours. The first system will move in late Tuesday into early Wednesday with light Valley rain. There should be enough snow, just under three inches, for momentary chain controls over major passes as some point early Wednesday. Winds will kick up as well in the high Sierra, with 10-15 mph wind and 30 mph gusts.
The system will clear on Wednesday, just in time for a new system to move in later that evening night and into early Thursday morning. This should have a bit more Valley rain, but less than a tenth of an inch, and more Sierra snow, with 2-4 inches, possible for the resorts. This system is colder and we could see flurries down to 4,000 feet or lower. Chain controls are also possible early Thursday.
Friday should be a clear and cool, with another system shaping up for Saturday with more Valley rain and 6-8 inches of Sierra snow.
All three storms wouldn't be considered strong, but snow and chain controls would be the biggest impact for drivers along with wet roads at times for valley travelers.
