NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — Heavy rain and snow have returned to Northern California causing chain controls to go into effect for parts of Interstate 80 Thursday night.

According to a tweet from Cal Trans District 3, chains are required on all vehicles, except those with 4-wheel-drive and snow tires, on Interstate 80 from Nyack in Placer County to the Donner Lake Interchange in Nevada County in both directions. Chains are also required for the same vehicles going eastbound from Truckee to Eagle Lakes.

The speed limit during chain controls on I-80 is 30 mph.

A Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect through 4 am Friday with travel delays heading into the Sierra. Two more weather systems will follow Thursday's storm. Showers return to the valley and Sierra overnight Friday through Saturday.
