'Fire weather' returns for the weekend

Warming temperatures with gusty winds are expected Saturday afternoon into Sunday evening

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — UPDATE - 10/05/19 6:30PM

Power shutoffs are expected to impact more than 10,000 customers in portions of Butte, Plumas, and Yuba counties. The anticipated time for the shutoff is 10 p.m. Saturday.

Original story:

An approaching high-pressure system will lead to warmer temp and, gusty winds along with lower relative humidity over the weekend. For that reason, the National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the northern Coastal Range and the western side of the Sacramento Valley and adjacent foothills.

RELATED:

Per the National Weather Service, these locations will have N/NE wind gusting to 25 to 35 mph. The highest threat will be over the west side of the Sacramento Valley and into the northern Coastal Range and eastern foothills, especially Saturday night into early Sunday when winds will be strongest.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended during this time frame.

One of the major factors in play this weekend will be our warmer temperatures. Having enjoyed the 70's for much of the workweek, our 3 Day Forecast shows high temperatures on Saturday in the lower 80's. Sunday's afternoon highs in the upper 80's and Monday's afternoon highs near 90 degrees. These temperatures for Sunday and Monday are above average for this time of the year.

The bottom line - A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.  A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
