Triple-digit heat returns to Northern California for the first weekend of summer

Pleasant weather is ahead for the next couple days before the heat returns by Friday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif —

Following a stretch of critical weather conditions, a shift in the weather pattern will deliver a nice couple of days of weather before more triple-digit heat arrives for the weekend.

A shift in wind direction on Tuesday evening from the north back to onshore flow raised humidity values and ended the critical fire weather conditions. Smoke will still be present in areas however, mainly from the Sites Fire burning in Colusa County.

The evening delta breeze will be present throughout the weekend, helping cool things down at night.

Through Thursday, California will be under the influence of troughing, keeping high temperatures near seasonal averages. High temperatures on Wednesday will only be in the upper 80s, which is below the normal high of 90 in Sacramento this time of year.

ABC10 Meteorologist Rob Carlmark tells us what to expect for the next 10 days of weather.

Thursday will be slightly warmer than Wednesday with highs in the low to mid 90s across the valley. Thursday is also the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. However, the latest sunset of the year will occur on June 27, according to timeanddate.com

Friday is when the heat will really begin to ramp up with upper 90s to around 100 degree high temperatures forecast in the valley. Saturday will be the hottest day of the week, but it won’t be hot enough to challenge any daily records.

The forecast high on Saturday is 102 degrees in Sacramento and most of the valley will be a bit warmer than that. The foothills will be in the 90s this weekend and the Sierra will be in the 80s.

A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in the valley and lower foothills.

Sunday will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday but still well above average. The Climate Prediction Center favors warmer than average temperatures sticking around through at least the next two weeks, continuing what has already been a very warm June.

Warmer than normal conditions are favored to persist the next two weeks for most of the US including California.

As of June 19, downtown Sacramento’s average temperature is 3.8 degrees above average. Both April and May were warmer than average as well.
