California Storm Watch: Officials brace for flooding as series of storm bring rain, snow to state

Heavy showers moved in Saturday night with even more downpours arriving Sunday night into Monday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A series of atmospheric river storms brought heavy downpours to the Valley and Foothill regions Saturday and is forecast to bring more widespread heavy rain and showers Sunday night through Monday morning.

A Flood Watch is in effect for the Sacramento Valley and Sierra foothills from Sunday afternoon to early Tuesday morning. A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the Sierra and will continue until Monday evening.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is bracing for the potential for flooding by prepositioning personnel and fire engines. The 26 crews will be prepositioned in El Dorado, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake and Glenn counties.

El Dorado County has the most crews prepositioned with the Office of Emergency Services dedicating five local government engines and four local government overhead vehicles to the area.

According to fire crews in the El Dorado community of Rescue, several drivers were rescued after getting stuck in flooding on Jurgens Road near Weber Creek. In a Facebook post, the Rescue Fire Department urged people to avoid that area and any other flooded roads.

In Placer County, Saturday's rainfall overpowered storm drains in Granite Bay causing some flooding, fire officials said. Crews diverted the flood water to a green space nearby. No damage was reported to any homes.

Sacramento County residents concerned about flooding can pick up sandbags at 3847 Branch Center Road, 6826 Hazel Avenue, 7320 Florin Mall Drive, or at 7995 Elwyn Avenue.

The California Department of Transportation asked members of the public Friday to delay any mountain travel if possible due to predicted stormy conditions.

Chain controls were in place Saturday night, but most were lifted by Sunday morning.

Also on Friday the state's largest energy utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric, posted to social media warning residents about the incoming storm.

In a post on X, PG&E asked people not to touch any downed power lines, to have fresh drinking water and ice ready, to charge cell phones and laptops, to use generators safely if needed, to have alternate plans for medicines to medical devices and to use flashlights instead of candles in the event of a power outage.
