Coldest weather of winter hits Northern California

Freezing and near freezing temperatures will affect millions of Californians this week. So bundle up!

SACRAMENTO, Calif — A Freeze Warning issued Tuesday in Northern California ended at 9 a.m., but that doesn't mean the cold is leaving.

As cold, arctic winds out of the north descended into the Valley, many areas overnight reached freezing or below-freezing temperatures. For Northern California, those spots were mostly in the San Joaquin Valley, Stockton, Modesto, Merced, to south Sacramento. The coldest areas were in the San Joaquin Valley, where temperatures reached as low as the upper 20s.

Just because it's cold, that doesn't mean we won't see the sun. This week should be dry with sunshine continuing throughout the week, with daytime highs in the mid 50s, although temperatures will feel much colder due to the wind chill factor.

If you're unfamiliar with the term, the wind chill is the temperature it "feels like" to the body. When winds, especially cold arctic winds, combine with the temperature outside, it provides us with an anticipated colder temperature. What thermometers read isn't necessarily how our bodies perceive that temperature. That's why "wind chill factors" are taken into account. It helps in planning your day.

Light to breezy winds will continue Tuesday making a 53 degree day feel more like a 45!

As a precaution during times of freezing temperatures, remember to bring pets into indoors to keep warm, bring weather-sensitive plants indoors or cover them, and make sure to dress in layers.

Expect Wednesday morning to have the same near-freezing temperatures once again, while Thursday morning will see a slight rise in the upper 30s.
