SACRAMENTO, California —
Mild, slightly chilly weather is forecast for the spookiest night of the year.
Northern California finds itself under the influence of a high-pressure system building into the region from the Pacific, which generally means clear skies and mild temperatures. That will be the case this year, although the clear skies and light winds will help temperatures drop rapidly once the sun sets.
Sunset on Halloween is 6:07 p.m., but the last light isn’t until 6:34 p.m.
Temperatures around this time will be in the lower 60s but will drop into the 50s by 8 p.m. Temperatures will continue to drop throughout the night and will dip into the upper 30s and lower 40s across the valley and into the teens in the Sierra. Three out of the last four mornings have had temperature readings into the upper 30s at Sacramento Executive Airport.
The historical average high temperature for Sacramento on Oct. 31 is 72 degrees and the forecast high is 73 degrees, so temperatures will be right around what can typically be expected for Halloween.
Last year, temperatures were slightly below average and Sacramento reached a high temperature of 69 degrees. The record high was set in 2015 at 86 degrees, so thankfully temperatures won’t get anywhere close to that.
While it will be a clear, rain-free evening this year, that is not always the case. Sacramento has had measurable rainfall five times since 2000 on Halloween, but it hasn’t happened since 2016.
Dry weather is expected the rest of the work week but a low-pressure system this weekend will help to drop temperatures and raise rain chances.
