SACRAMENTO, Calif —

A warm weekend is on tap for Northern California.

Thanks to an unusually strong ridge of high pressure in place, temperatures are set to rise to near daily record high levels across the state.

Before that, high temperatures on Friday and Saturday will still be above average for this time of year but not as warm as they will be on Sunday. Expect high temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s on Friday and low to mid 60s on Saturday across the valley. Sierra highs will be in the 40s and 50s.

A weather system will clip the northern tier of the state and showers are possible as far south as Yuba City on Saturday but otherwise a dry weekend is expected for most of the region.

By Sunday, the aforementioned ridge of high pressure will be overhead and will stick around through Tuesday before a cooling trend begins Wednesday.

The record high in Downtown Sacramento on Sunday and Monday is 70 degrees and the forecast high on both of those days is 69 degrees. Tuesday will be in the upper 60s as well across the valley and Sierra highs will push into the 50s.

Following the warm start to next week, a pattern shift is on tap and California will be back in a cooler, wetter pattern.

Even though Sacramento has received at least 0.01” of rain 11 out of 24 days this month so far, the city is still below average in terms of rainfall due to the storms being relatively weak. Downtown Sacramento is just over an inch below average this season in terms of rainfall.

Current guidance shows atmospheric river activity ramping up around Feb. 1 with impacts similar to last weekend’s event. There is still a lot of uncertainty in the forecast, but it is safe to say wet weather is on the way in early February.
