SACRAMENTO, Calif — It's been nearly two years since a beloved Inderkum High School football coach was gunned down in Downtown Sacramento. Now, Sacramento Police have announced Tahje Michael was arrested in North Carolina in connection to the case.
Police said the shooting dates back to July 4, 2022, when Greg Najee Grimes was shot and killed outside a Sacramento nightclub. Last month, Sacramento police announced a partnership with America's Most Wanted to help track down Tahje Michael in North Carolina.
"Tips were coming in after the show aired. And then, our investigators followed up on those tips and information and leads and which actually led to the apprehension of Tahje Michael," said Officer Anthony Gamble, spokesperson for Sacramento Police Department.
Soon after the announcement was made, Najee's family celebrated through the pain.
"Here we are, we got him. And that's it. We got him, and that's everything!" said Deborah Grimes, Najee's mother.
While today was a celebration, the family said it's still a painful day.
"We're elated, but still there those break down moments because, you know, we're at the reality of why we're here," said Deborah.
Understanding that the road to justice will be a long one, Deborah said she wants the suspect to understand he's responsible for taking away someone who mattered to the community.
"I just want him to know that he really, he messed up. He really did. And he's going to pay for this. Absolutely," she said.
It's still unclear if Najee and the suspect knew each other and what led up to the shooting. Police said that is still under investigation.
