Witness, neighbor describe scene after deadly shooting outside party in Fair Oaks

Deputies were called to a report of shots fired at a house party around 1:30 a.m. in the 11000 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard. The victim was lying in the street.

FAIR OAKS, Calif. — A man identified by school officials as a Sierra College football player was shot and killed early Sunday morning after a house party Fair Oaks, Sacramento sheriff's officials confirm.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the 11000 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. after receiving a report of shots fired at a house party. When they arrived, deputies said they found a man in the road suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In a tweet Sunday evening, Sierra College officials identified sophomore Chancelor Fields-Colbert, a football player from Fairbanks, Alaska, as the man killed in the shooting.

The Sacramento County Coroner has yet to officially identify the victim in the shooting.

"We are saddened to hear that Sierra College Wolverine, Chancelor Fields-Colbert, passed away early Sunday, July 21," the college's athletics' tweet read. "Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this tragic time. He will be deeply missed by his teammates, coaches, fellow students, Sierra faculty and staff."

Witnesses who spoke with ABC10 said there were several students from the college at the party.

"It was supposed to be a college send-off party full of people from Rocklin, Sierra College. Nice kids. Just like an Airbnb location type of thing," said Jennifer-Rose, a witness who was at the Saturday night house party. The woman did not wish to give her full name.

"It really wasn't that crazy, it wasn't scary until the fights started breaking off," Jennifer-Rose added.

Although the home is tucked up a hill behind a gated property off of Sunset Avenue, neighbors could hear things start to escalate.

"It was rowdy-type people and you could tell there were going to be problems and there were," Sid Johnson, a neighbor said.

Jennifer-Rose noticed multiple fights start. She said one of her friends tried to break them up.

"One of my friends was drunk and he didn't really see how serious it was, and he was trying to stop everything, I was screaming at them to stop and get out of there and that's when everything popped off, literally," she said.

Jennifer-Rose told ABC10 she ran upstairs in fear of her own life.

"We all run into the top room and me and my friends wound up hiding in the closet for a second to decide what to do and then we wound up jumping out the window of the second story," she said.

After she jumped out the window and crossed the street to get to her car, Jennifer-Rose said she noticed a suspicious person.

"[The suspicious person] said they wanted to hurt somebody," Jennifer-Rose recalled. "And their friends tried to stop him from continuing with the gun and stuff and they weren't successful. And unfortunately, we lost a really good person."

Minutes after shots were fired, investigators say the crowd scattered. When officers arrived they said they found a man in the middle of the road.

Johnson has lived next door for 22 years, and in that time he said he's never seen anything quite like this.

"Never ever. It was the same owners for 99 years — 100 years, and they died," Johnson said. "And that's the reason why they sold the property."

It wasn't until a few months ago when neighbors said the home was turned into an Airbnb rental.

According to investigators, several partygoers ran away at the sound of the gunshots and they believe someone may have witnessed the shooting and could have information to help solve this case.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about this incident to call Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357. Callers can remain anonymous.
