Folsom doughnut shop opens 2nd location closer to Highway 50 after 35 years of business

One employee attributed Baker’s Dozen Donuts success to a few employees performing most of the shop’s work and offering product at a low price.

FOLSOM, Calif. — A doughnut shop operating in Folsom for 35 years opened a second location earlier this month.

On Aug. 1, Baker’s Dozen Donuts rolled out sweet treats at 2700 East Bidwell St., Suite #300, located roughly 10 minutes east from its first location at 717 East Bidwell St., Suite #1, which has operated since 1989, according to Baker’s Dozen spokeswoman Sopha Sean.

The second location is closer to Highway 50, El Dorado Hills and Placerville, while the first location is situated near Historic Folsom, she said.

“We wanted to extend ourselves to make it convenient for the customers,” Sean said.

In Historic Folsom, ice cream shop Sweet Dozen Cones and barbecue restaurant J. Wild’s closed within days of each other in August. Sean said Baker’s Dozen survives because they do most of the shop’s work themselves among a few employees, and their product is offered at a low price.

“If you have $2, you can buy a doughnut,” she said.

There are reportedly no differences between the first and second Baker’s Dozen locations, and the shop has used the same products in 35 years of business. In social media posts, the shop often features fun, themed designs on their baked goods.

“Everything (is) the same: traditional doughnuts, family-making,” Sean said. “You know, we put love in there.”

She said the shops are operated by Richard and Sopha Tep, and the couple took over operations in 2018 from Sopha’s aunt, Cindy.

Baker’s Dozen may open a third location next year, but employees and operators have to see how the second one goes, Sean said.
