SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Several people were pepper sprayed after a fight broke out during a basketball game at Sacramento High School on Saturday night, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Officers responded to Sacramento High School at 7:35 p.m. where they found several people who had been pepper sprayed, police say.
Two people got into a fight in the gymnasium lobby during the girls' varsity basketball game against Grant Union High School, Sacramento High School officials say.
The high school hired an outside security firm to monitor the game due to the school's rivalry, and security guards used pepper spray to stop the fight. School officials say police were called to the scene in advance based on rumors that an altercation was being planned for after the game.
Other people were exposed to the pepper spray as they left the gym and passed through the lobby, according to school officials.
No one was injured as a result of the incident. Police say extra officers stayed on scene to help with crowd control, as a large group of people left at the same time.
The two people who got into a fight were not Sacramento High School students, according to school officials.
"Sac High is incredibly disappointed and does not believe it is ever appropriate for behavior or situations like this to emerge at student events," said Kari Wehrly, Chief St. HOPE charter schools in a statement released Saturday night. "Safety is our utmost priority and we will continue to examine our campus activities and upcoming game schedules, identify potential safety issues, and take every reasonable action to ensure the safest experience possible for all in attendance."
Police say no arrests have been made at this time.
