ELK GROVE, Calif. — The city of Elk Grove continues to expand bringing in more economic development opportunities. Friday was the soft launch, and Saturday will be the grand ribbon cutting of the new Macy’s located off Laguna Boulevard.
The grand opening comes as Macy’s is closing 150 stores through 2026 to capitalize on real estate.
Bryan Montemayor with Macy’s says they have had a great response from the community.
"What you can look for here at this location is a lot everything you see in our bigger stores just on a little bit of a smaller format," said Montemayor. "We will have everything from online that customers will be able to pick up in-store, we also have prestige beauty, on-trend cosmetics, shoes, handbags, and a little of everything as far as apparel goes."
Elk Grove landed one of the coveted small store formats, only 30 are opening across the nation.
“The interest really is the area. There's a lot of growth opportunity here,” said Montemayor.
Elk Grove has seen several new business openings. Nordstrom Rack opened a store in the city at the end of May and Amazon Fresh is set to open Sept. 12.
Elk Grove’s Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen says this will increase the tax base.
“Measure E funding which is bringing in over $30 million a year to our great city of course Macy’s will add to that,” said Allen.
Macy’s estimates the store will also bring about 20 new jobs into the community. Mayor Singh Allen says this is just the beginning.
“Under construction right now we have Whole Foods, we have Yarhouse and Mendicino Farms,” said Allen.
And as the city continues to expand with new stores and restaurants, they are also looking to expand infrastructure.
"With new development comes new needs and so we will be seeing a train station getting ready to break ground of course we are focused on long-term needs for residents that include traffic congestion and ultimately bringing light rail to Elk Grove,” said Singh Allen.
